Salvage Old Asphalt Pavements
As pavements age they deteriorate. The weather takes its toll, the sun and heat dry out natural asphalt binders thus making the asphalt pavement not as flexible as it once was, raveling may be noticeable, shrinkage cracks, or stress cracks can occur allowing the intrusion of water/moisture into the pavement and underlying base courses. This results in more damage to the asphalt pavement.
Prior to chip sealing an existing pavement large cracks should be filled/sealed, alligator backed cracking i.e. broken asphalt, should be removed and replaced with hot mix asphalt material compacted into place. Pot holes, low areas and divots should also be repaired with hot mix asphalt materials. Once the necessary repairs are completed the chip seal application can be started. The restored pavement can be utilized again with years of service.
Asphalt Pavement Rejuvenators
Rejuvenators are designed to penetrate and treat the asphalt surface replenishing the asphalt binder lost through aging, weathering, and oxidation. Rejuvenators offer a deep black color and like new appearance, they may also help melt snow and ice faster under certain conditions. Typically, a one coat application is applied by standard asphalt distributor trucks, equipped with metering devises to assure the rejuvenating material product is properly applied at the required rate and temperature.
Rejuvenating surface treatments are ideal for sealing newer asphalt pavements that have never been seal coated. Rejuvenating surface treatments waterproof asphalt pavements including secondary roads, private streets, parking lots, airport runways and taxiways, etc. Typical drying time is approximately 30 min. to 60 min.
We do not recommend sanding the surface as this only absorbs the rejuvenating product, thus inhibiting the effects and defeating the whole purpose. Also, incorporating aggregates is not recommended. Rejuvenating materials are designed to penetrate the asphalt pavement, not to stand on top like traditional seal coat materials. However, prior to the application of a surface treatment, an existing asphalt pavement surface must be properly evaluated/repaired.
As experienced asphalt paving contractors, Jim George & Sons, LLC. can determine the correct surface treatment products for a particular project.
